Please does anyone remember my cousin this is the info I got from family please help me!Sgt. Larry Duane Jameson-KIA in Vietnam on 10/8/1963. On 10/8/1963, a USAF pilot had been shot down (Captain Dean Wadsworth) about 40 miles south of Danang, South Vietnam. Two Marine helicopters of the 1st Marine Air Wing (HMM-361) were immediately dispatached from the Danang airfield to effect a search-and-rescue mission. Due to the urgency, we have never been able to sort out who was with each helicopter - but we know that there were a total of 9 Marines and 3 Navy Corpsmen onboard. They had arrived at the position of the downed pilot, and one of the helicopters started taking ground fire as it started to descend. These hits caused it to go into a tail spin, and it rotated into the second helicopter - causing both to crash/burn, killing all 12 men. The carnage was so bad that two of the remains (1 Marine, 1 Corpsman) were never found/identified, and subsequent searches for the pilot were unfruitfull - he also is listed as one of our MIA's. This incident became the largest number of US servicemen killed in the war up to that date on a single day. What's interesting is that Larry Jameson was trained as a Avionics Technican - and as the war escalated, he would never have been onboard for this type of mission - but he, along with 3 other technicians had gone along on that fateful day......a true Marine.

Hello HMH-463 Comrades who may know me (look under photo's for 1974 - that was me). Anyway, after 4 Enlisted years, 12 1/2 Officer years (got forced out during RIF of 1991/1992), and 10 Reserve years, I just got 3 years Active Duty orders (made possible due to the Iraq/Afghanistan situation)at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, GA. This will put me past the 20 year active duty mark, and I will 'finally' be able to get that elusive 20 year active duty retirement! Yep, a couple of weeks ago Charley Pettys stopped by Bakersfield and we made the connection. I'm thinkin' 34 years had past. I was so nervous I could hardly stand it. We were HMH-463 bubble chasers during 70-71 and were good friends right off. One problem I had with this visit, I felt like I was talking to Charley's grandfather. I got used to it though. We will meet again someday soon. We would like to hear from others like Mario Quesada, Manguso, Connie Tepper (the old man), Quinn, and others that names have eluded me. I did hear from Spencer. He lives in West Virginia and retired from the Army as a full Colonel. Hell, if I would have known you could go from being a Sergeant in the Corps to a Colonel in the Army, I might have done that also!

Couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to spend some time on the West Coast. I'm still buzzed about getting to visit with Larry South, a fellow former Sgt and and buddy from the "Dimmer" Hydraulic Shop at MMAF 70-71. It was great to see him doing well and enjoying life. We had not seen each other since he left RVN in 1971. Remembered some old names and incidents. WOW! was the high light of my trip. Larry still looks like a 21 year old stud...just a little heavier, grayer and middle aged wiser. Good to see him. Hope some other squadron mates are able to hook up with some long lost buds. Mario Quesada, where are you?

Hello Marines! Here's my little story. I was a former Cpl. at the time and caught the tail end of 463's involvement in country, arriving at Marble Mountain in Jan. 71. I was initially put in check crew, but was a qualified crew chief and wanted to be on the flightline and fly everyday. Within a few weeks I got my wish. Our planes were already covered with at least one assigned crewchief, so I hooked up with Sgt. Joe Miller on YH-09. We renamed our bird "Canned Hate" in preperation for the Laos Invasion. We also changed over to 50's instead of M-60's on the sides. YH-09 used to be called "The Green Slime". Since Joe and I were both crewchiefs, we would take turns pre-flighting her, and in flight Joe would typically crew the bird while I would cover the right gun. I remember we also sometimes took an extra gunner to fly "stinger" with an M-60 on the ramp with a gunners belt. We even had a makeshift gun mount on a pallet that we sometimes used when we knew we were going in hot. It took some balls to fly tail gun. Gary Neely was a ready volunteer. He was a retread from the grunts and was at Khe Sahn in 68 during the seige. He got hit pretty bad up there and told me when he got medivaced to Dong Ha, him and a bunch of other wounded Marines were laid out on the tarmac, waiting to be transported for treatment when the gooks hit them with incoming mortars! He wanted to "Get some" payback at every chance he could get. Anyway, we couldn't help but notice that more than 50% of the strikes to the our a/c hit the back half of the bird. I think that was because with our 53's being so large, it looked like we were just lumbering through the air, when in reality we were hauling ass and the gooks just didn't lead the bird enough to compensate for our airspeed. I have noticed in recent years with The Iraq War, etc., that Marines now do that as a standard practice. I think we did it first in Vietnam, on our own. I believe we got the idea mainly from from the Airforce HH-53 Jolley Greens, which they used for downed pilot recovery missions. They ran a minigun stinger, as well as at the sides, with armour plating all over since they weren't concerned with lifting heavy payloads! We were very fortunate to fly in 53's. Those airplanes could handle an incredible amount of battle damage, and they were so frigging powerful! A combat climb out of a hot LZ in a 53D was an experience to behold! I knew they were strong, but never felt the incredible max. power that a 53 actually possess until we started flying those missions in Laos! During Lam Son 719, Joe and I were lucky. We caught many, many missions across the border and never went down. Joe really tickled me sometimes. He would typically lie down on a bunch of bullet bouncers at the hell hole in preperation to pickle a load in an emergency, or just to be at the ready to drop our load in the zone. I remember looking back at him and watching him shoot at gooks we were flying over, with his pistol, through the hell hole! I remember we almost always had to wait for the fog to lift at Quang Tri, before going into Kilo (our own forward base) within a mile or two south of the Khe Sahn airstrip. I remember that's when we usually caught breakfast, sitting on the ramp, using JP and dirt in a can for a stove to heat up our c-rats. One of the most amazing sights in my memory up at Kilo, was when we received incoming while we were waiting for missions to cross the border. Everyone on the base would turn up at once and took off for LZ Stud (Vandigrift) to try to preserve our aircraft. I remember one time we were taking a pretty heavy barrage of 122's, and our left gunner was standing outside the bird with a fire bottle while our pilots were turning up! I yelled at him to get his butt in the plane right now! He obviously didn't realize how fast a combat launch can happen! Ha Ha! It was amazing that we didn't have a bunch of mid air collisions in those frantic moments! There were Army helicopters everywhere! They were above us, below us, behind us, in front of us - it was mind blowing - so many helicopters you couldn't begin to count them. Our squadron was very fortunate that we only lost two birds during that operation! I attribute most of that to the bravery, extremee skill, superior flying tactics, and the level of experience of our Marine aviators in high threat environments, since we operated in I Corps all the time. A lot of those Army helo units came up from the south for that operation, where I presume they really weren't exposed to much enemy contact, up to that point. I also distinctly remeber that our flight leaders had the balls to stand up to the Army and refused to take on mission assignments that didn't require our heavy lift capabilities. We refused to expose our giant 53's when smaller and much more numerous helicopters could handle the payloads. We were continually amazed at the size, scope and tactics the Army employed to handle troop insertions and extractions under heavy fire, including radar controlled AAA batteries! I remember seeing more than one formation in excess of a hundred helicopters, where fifty or sixty were pretty common. Imagine watching dozens and dozens of helicopters orbiting extremely hot LZ's and remaining on station for appeared to be extended period of extreme exposure, patiently waiting their turn to go in to load or off load - while virtually their entire time on station they were slugging it out with small arms and AAA - amazing! That was so different than the way we inserted and extracted troops. We did it fast and furious with minimal exposure (time on station). We also chose to fly at much higher altitudes, like 9000 ft., while they flew those giant formations within flak range. We figured we would take our chances with the potential missle threat and avoid as much as possible the obvious real threat of AAA. What was really amazing were their extractions! As I recall, virtually every firebase we set up in Laos eventually got overrun! Thank God we weren't tasked with those troop hauling duties in Loas! On many firebases, the ARVN were in an absolute panic. They literally threw down their weapons and were storming and overloading the Hueys so they couldn't pull out of the LZ's (instead of providing cover for their own withdrawal), with literally dozens of Hueys orbiting right above them, waiting their turn to come in and pick them up! I remember seeing ARVN hanging all over their skids as they pulled out. Some Army flight crews told us they actually had to grease their skids to try to keep their planes from being overwhelmed, in addition to having to shove many of them back off! Until I saw that with my own eyes, I took for granted the extreme discipline that US and ROK Marines possess during emergency extractions. You had to hand it to those Army flight crews. They were extremely brave, exposing themselves for extended periods and having to deal with such unruly troops! I am quite certain that many, many additional ARVN and US Army avaitors were killed and injured as the result of the ARVN's total lack of cool under fire. It was a travisty! To this day, my heart goes out to all those brave Army avaitors that needlessly lost their lives and got their a/c all shot up trying to save those panic stricken troops! This is a great website. I really am glad I found it. Now that I know about it, I am looking forward to going to some of these reunions and seeing some of my old buds and other 463 and helo Marines! Let's see - let me think of a few names of guys I remember: Joe Miller, Stu Jenkins, Mike Masterman, John Casolo, John Watts, Gary Galatro, Gary Collins, Gary Neely, Trehillio, Pogany, Jimmy Douglas, Capt. Wempmere, Capt. Cipolla. I also remember what a cool CO L/Col. Reap was! Remember our squadron party when we were leaving Marble? He surley took some heat over that! Ha Ha! There's only one thing about my time in 463 that bothers me to this day. When we pulled out of Vietnam, I went with 4 of our airplanes that were being transferred to 462 in Okinawa. I ordered a 463 cruise book and it was sent to my home of record (my mother's house) and my little brother was still living there. He was just a kid and took it to school to show his friends and somehow lost it. I never even got to eyeball it - Dang it! If amyone out there would be kind enough to copy theirs at kinkos or something, I'll be very greatful and more than happy to pay you for doing that for me. You can contact me at 770-971-8145 or email me at billslink@bellsouth.net. I look forward to seeing some of you guys at some of our upcoming reunions! Semper Fi, Brothers!

Hey guys, Don't know if any of you know Ralph Wright. He was a Sikorsky Tech Rep in the 70's at New River. Ralph has a severe case of cancer with has gotten into the lymph nodes. I got a call from his wife Shirley and she says the treatments he has received has killed the cancer. Knowing Shirley and her faith in God (which I am not knocking by any means because I believe in Him as well) I think she is pulling at straws unless it is a miracle as she claims. Anyway she asked that I pass this information on to any Marines that might remember Ralph and ask them to give him a call. She says he sits by the phone and just waits for it to ring. So if you know him or not, why not give him a call and say hello.

Thanks, Bart

Hello 463, I was your own personal Combat Photographer on Eagle Pull and Frequest Wind. It is nice to find your web site. I have lots of photographs I can send to you for the site if you want. I can also send captions for some you already have on the site for 1974 and 1975. I would like for any of the pilots and crews on the 1975 cruise to contact me if possible. If you have a reunion any time PLEASE let me know I would like to attend. Thank you it was a pleasure to accompany you into Cambodia and Vietnam even though you almost left me in Phnom Penh. Thanks Capt Potter for picking me up. I still owe you a drink for that. Semper Fi, Donnie Shearer,GYSGT,USMC Ret. Combat Photographer, Vietnam 1968,69,75 UHRUH!!!

Just looked through the message board archives and saw a note from J.D. Jones, We had so many Jones’s in the Sqd. (’67-’68) that we just used initials, JD, JJ, and a few others. I was Crew Chief on YH-9 for a while then had a striped down 53 that was used just for A/C recovery (some of the armor was taken off as well as the ramp, and some of the flooring as well). My First Mech. while we were in Quinn Tri, Det. “A” was Gates, don’t recall his first name but he saved my butt and other parts from a rat one night in the hooch. Left MMAF in Dec of 68 and went to New River. Loved it there so much I volunteered for DI school and spent the next two years at PI. Lost track of most of the guys during that time and never thought I see anything about them again. Will keep checking in to see what’s new, great site!

As a lot of you know, I have been incrementally developing a DVD based on HMH-463 Operations circa 1972-1975 including Operations Endsweep, Eagle Pull, and Frequent Wind. I am gradually perfecting and adding to the content and quality of this DVD as one of my "hobbies." The latest version has just been mailed to several of you and it begins to include Names of the crew members pictured and other technical data surrounding the period. I am now offering to accept any relevant photos of Crew Members, as long as I am alive, for an "In Memoriam" section at the end dedicated to our fallen crewmates - please provide photo and any info you would like to see in the section. People providing material will be credited as appropriate and be sent an updated version of this project. All of course, on me. It's the least I can do for one of the most momentous periods of time in my life. Semper Fi, Donald Begley

After a crappy day at work I arrived home to find Don Begley's DVD in my mailbox. What a lift!!! I was with Dimmer's from 68 thru 71, and was long gone when they returned to Vietnam for the de-mining operations. But to see those big fella's and hear those rotors again took me back. You did a great job Don and a huge service to all of us former Dimmer types. Thank you on a job well done. Fratres Aeterni

I served as a Crew Chief with HMH 463 from 1976 to 1979. I only recognized two names on the site Sgt Mark Williams and Cpl Dave Boyd, but I was glad to hear from so many who served this great squadron. I look back now so many years later and wonder what happen to the likes of MGYSGT Alfred Doering, SGT Major Siegler, WO-4 Gunner Anderson, Major Rick Chandler,Captains "Too Tall" Kenney, Captain Pete Farley and Captain Bob McCormick, along with two deceased fello Marines, Master Sergeant Jerry " Top Mead" and Lt. Jeff Hopkins who all left positive impacts on my life today. I have forged these names in my mind and will not likely forget them in my lifetime. I would like to know when the next squadron re-union is scheduled. It would be nice to meet those I served with and those who served before and after my service. Hello End Sweep Vets. Rainbow Tails. I just found the site 30+ years later. I was a crewchief during that time. I'm looking to see if anyone knows the whereabouts of Dana (Dan) Randall, or Bill Denton. I hope you've all faired well and recognise a lot of faces on the 1973 picture album, and some of the 1974 guys, although I was in HMX1 by then. Good, and strange, to see you all again.

My name is Mike Krizan and I was in 463 metalshop in 1977-80. I was in the crash on 18 May 1980 that killed 7 and left me and co-pilot Boyer with bad burns. I was burned over 50% with most being 3rd degree. We were med evacted to Brooke Army Burn Center in San Antionio where we were in the same ward with the guys from the Iran fiasco. Since being med retired in 1980 I went on to get my A&P license along with my private pilot license. I live in the country on a private airstrip. I have my IA and run my own small shop with selected customers. I am married and have a 10 year old daughter. I would like to get back to KMCAS to see the changes. Ken Cromwell was a good friend of mine and was crew chief on the flight. The only reason I got out is that I was the only one in the back by the ramp door. I am interested in tring to find some pictures of the crash site if anybody has some. Glad I ran accross this site, Mike Krizan, Cpl USMC Ret.

One hell of a website. I served my best years with the Yankee Hotel posse,1994 thru 1997. I only just recently EAS'd from 464. Not a day goes by that I don't think back to my days with the Pegasus. I am working on CH-54's now but it just isn't quite the same. My heartfelt thanks to all the Viet Nam vets. You were all the best. Marines, My name is Brad Brown, I retired from the Corps in Feb of 04 and am currently working with a company called Heavylift Helicopters Inc. out of Apple Valley Ca. We just bought 2 CH-53D's out of the "boneyard" in Tucson. We are currently flying them and getting them ready to become firetankers for the foresty dept. We are going to out fit them with 2 1100 gallon tanks internal and use a snorkle to suck the water in. One of the aircraft we have is Buno 156668. The history of this aircraft shows that it was in 463 from 69 to about 1980. I am trying to find some history of the aircraft that we can place on a plaque by the crewchiefs seat to show the history. I think this aircraft used to be YH-12 but I'm not sure. If any body can give me any information about this one or the other aircraft Buno 156674 please give me a shout.

I have been looking around the web, looking for stories that took place inside of or around the CH-53D helicopter. (Why? read or listen to: http://www.taht.net/uncle_bills_helicopter.html I'm always looking for sea stallion stories... And I've always wanted to get near one, or even fly in one, one day. I'm going around the world soon, and I've heard that there are CH-53Ds in Japan and Hawaii still on active duty. Any way to get a visit?

Recently Don Begley posted a message indicating that he had converted his 8mm movies of Operation End Sweep to a DVD. He also had some footage from the return after Operation's Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind. He offered a copy of his DVD to any interested former HMH-463 Marine's from that era. I was in Avionics with Don from 1973 to 1975, so I missed End Sweep, but I made Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind. I took him up on his offer, and when I returned from my reserve duty yesterday, the DVD was in my mailbox. As I sat and watched it, I couldn't help having a smile on my face, as I watched our Sea Stallion's taking off from the USS Inchon, or hovering, or flying by, or landing. And seeing the Marine's onboard going about their daily routine, working on the birds, or sunbathing, or whatever. I recognized Bob Brookins, and saw some faces I recognized but couldn't put a name to. I even spotted myself on the flightline as the CH-53D's were flying in from the USS Eenterprise - and wives and kids were eagerly waiting for their husbands - we all looked so different in the old Sateen Olive Drab Utilities, as compared to our new Digital Cammies that we have now. Don started out narrating a little on the DVD, and then he put some great music from that time on the sound track. I was very impressed - what a great trip down memory lane - a part of history - I highly recommend all of my HMH-463 Brothers to e-mail Don and ask for a copy of the DVD! Thank-you so much for putting that DVD together Don! Semper Fi! Ooh-Rah!

I don't remember the crew members names, but I was one of four Corporal's and Lance Corporal's sent over there to pull guard duty on the wreckage (basically to keep the locals away from the wreckage so they wouldn't get hurt), while waiting for the Navy Salvage Ship to arrive and transport the wreckage back to Oahu. We lived off of C-Rations that were onboard. Yummy! A jeep was ejected and flipped over - we got it back on it's wheels - hotwired a broken coil wire - and used it for runs to a nearby convenient store. We may have used it for climbing some sand dunes also - hey, Cpl's and L/Cpl's are gonna find a way to have fun! We also snorkelled and dove off the pier alot. I have some great photo's of the wreckage. And on the Salvage Vessel ride back, I had the best Chili and Rice of my life - those Navy Cook's! Well, that didn't answer your question, but I wanted to reply regardless! Semper Fi!!

I finally have converted HMH-463 End Sweep Minesweeping Operations (1972-1973 Disk 1, more to come) 8 mm footage to DVD. I am willing to send any interested party a copy as long as the footage is credited to me if used anywhere besides personal use. This footage covers shipboard ops and the homecoming flyover of 16 birds (the 17th didn't make it due to pylon/fold switch, if anyone remembers!). Actual birds sweeping can be seen in the footage - I believe this is either Cam Pha or Hong Gai, North Vietnam. Semper Fi! - Don Begley

What Squadron would have flown a medevac 1/2 - 3/4 mile NE of Liberty Bridge in Jan-Feb 69? No grid was given, just directions. No radio or map so we sent back runners. found 2 WIAs, one was squad leader, E5-E6, married 30s, with kids, the other an EM. Hueys came in low searching for us. High grass, they found the LZ NE perimeter first, I stood waving my arms. Lt threw yellow smoke grenade and medvac landed at dusk. Left at Dark. No idea what unit original patrol was from. WIAS were found by squad of transient volunteers from the north gate. Never saw the original squad except for the 2 WIAs. Joined by Lt and regular infantry squad. What unit would have flown the medevac. were the medevac choppers and the hueys from the same squadrons? I know the grid but need to find after action reports command chronologies to get the date and and so find the unit and who the WIAs were. Believe the squad leader survived.

I am a former VNAF UH1H crewchief, my former company was flight-squadron #233/41th Tactical regiment operated out of Danang AFB. I'm looking for info about Mr Mike Wasko whom I believed was the pilot of the USMC CH-53 that was shot down in LZ Hotel II in Laos, on 23/2/1971. My chopper too was shot down below the ridgeline at the same LZ few days after the downing of the CH-53 on 28/2/1971 on a medvac/retrieve mission. On landing, I saw the remain of that bird on the hill top of that extremely 'hot' LZ that morning, wondering what's on earth the big bird as such doing here? Regards

My dad served with the squadron '70-71. I am currently working in economic development and tourism in Waterloo, Iowa. We are home to the Five Sullivan Brothers who were all lost on the USS Juneau during WWII. Our museum has an extended military collection and is looking to add more as part of a large expansion. They are looking for aircraft and other large exhibits to purchase. My fondness and selfish regard for the Marine Helicopter community has me searching for a 53 to add as I am part of the decision-making process. I would appreciate the group keeping its eyes and ears open for any collections, etc. We had a Vietnam Veterans vigil and reunion here last week as part of our "Healing Fields" and Memorial. Met some 3rd Battalion Recon and also 105 gunners who recalled with much appreciation all the insertions and extraction plus resupply runs 463 provided. Semper Fi

I want to post a tribute to Kendell Cromwell, a fine Crew Chief killed when the Hog he was crewing crashed, I believe on Molokai. They were carrying 2 internal fuel bags for maneuvers refuel when they went in. 9 were on board, 7 were killed. I was supposed to crew that flight but was grounded for temporary vision problems so Kendell took it. Anyway I've had that on my chest for a long time. Semper Fi!

Great WebSite! I served with HMH-463 Avionics from Sept 73 to Sept 75, obviously including Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind. I was Cpl Hergert back then. In college, after realizing I really didn't want to be a Gym Teacher, I went to talk with the Marine OSO in Syracuse, NY. After I told him I used to fix helicopters, he asked me if I wanted to fly helicopters - I signed the dotted line again! I was commissioned a 2nd Lt in May 1980, attended the Basic School, and then went off to Pensacola, FL. After 3 months of flying, I realized I didn't want it bad enough, so I DOR'd, and then became a Ground Supply Officer. I was the CO of a Supply Det in northern Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield/Storm in 1990 and 1991. During the military cut backs of 1991 and 1992, I was passed over for Major twice, and forced out with 16 1/2 years of active duty. Not wanting to waste all that time, I entered the reserves in 1995. I'm in my 9th year now, and have qualified for a reserve retirement at age 60. That LtCol paycheck for one weekend a month is pretty darn good, so I'll keep doing it for a few more years. Plus I'm still proud to be a Marine! I saw a few names I recognized, so I'll be e-mailing you! Those were some good times at K-Bay! I was lucky enough to get stationed there again from 1990 to 1992 (minus 8 months in Saudi Arabia). Take Care HMH-463 Comrades! Semper Fi! Hergie

I was an FMF corpsman with Mike 3/9 aboard the USS Duluth (LPD 6) in April 1975. During Operation Frequent Wind, I took a picture of a CH-46 with what appears to be tail # YH 081 after it disgorged a slew of refugees aboard the My problem is that I do not know to which squadron this chopper belonged and perhaps someone can solve this for me. I'd love to send it to whomever flew in this Phrog.

Was a two-time member of -463. Came back from Viet Nam tour in `72 to K'Bay, just to turn around and do End Sweep. Left that tour in `74 to reacquaint myself with the Mainland. Back, again, to K'Bay in `83 with penalty tour at Brigade G-1 before becoming squadron XO from `84 - `86 under Ed Langston and Dan Pender. Son was born in `83 at Tripler. Fond memories of living on base at the beach and the great folks during BOTH tours. Will be at time share on Kauai late July-early August of `04. Trying to replace my squadron decals to put on new truck. Anyone able to help me out? An address for the squadron, or such? Best wishes to all for a great 2004. Geoff/Jeep

I was assigned to the U.S.S. Inchon, L.P.H. 12, as a flight deck P.O., landing officer, and S.A.R. crew member with the ships bird during our '72 / '73 time in the garden spot of the far east. The ship, and I obviously, were also involved with the mine sweeping of THE harbor. Does anyone, ANYONE, remember me. I flew with several of you. But it seems, if memory serves me right, and it is indeed questionable at this point (my memory that is), that I spent most of my time with 46's. I've been searching, looking for someone that can put me with the times indicated in their minds. Please feel free to respond....... ryan623@yahoo.com. I am a Veterans Counselor for a service organization in Texas. I have a veteran who was at Hue Phu Bai in 1968, the organization was MATCU-68. This is a Marine veteran who has been denied PTSD benefits by VA, yet his stressor letter along with a diagnosis have been cast aside because the stressed events aren't verified. What I'm looking for and hoping to find help with, is hard evidence of mortar and rocket fire received at the base. My veteran indicated an incident where 4 army soldiers were killed by having their throats cut during the night. Another incident involved a convoy mission where the forward troop truck was hit by enemy fire killing everyone in the truck. This veteran I represent does not recall the names involved, years and the desire to forget leave him with just the memories of the incidents. If any of these incidents are familiar or you know soldiers who were lost in incidents like this at this location, or you have knowledge of where I can get hard information about the base and attacks there, I would appreciate it if you'd contact me. It is my opinion that this veterans stressors can be verified and we can get him the help and entitlements which he deserves. Thanks your your help, Gary

I'd just like to thank all of you,....your organization and the members of HMH-463.

I did a search 2-3 years ago to try to find my cousin GSGT WIlliam P. Duckworth's (Duck) unit. I found it here at Pop-A-Smoke. Duck served at Marble Mountain from 69'-71' and subsequently retired from the Marine Corps after 20. Not long after his retirement, Bill was hit by a drunk driver as he was riding his motorcycle and ended up partially paralyzed and an amputee forever relegated to a wheel chair.

After contacting some of the guys in his unit,...some rallied around Bill and helped hook him up with the VA and DAV. He now finally has been awarded 100% Disability VA Benefits and Compensation.

I am a Navy Veteran too young to have served in Vietnam. However; I have 2 cousins that served in the Corps there. They both made it home. I have met many great Nam Vets over the years, and I salute you all for your commraderie and especially your Organization and the members of HMH-463 who exemplified Semper Fi. You helped one of your own....my cousin, Bill Duckworth, and I am eternally thankful to you for allowing me to reach out.

Sincerely with Gratitude,

Marines:

As former members of HMH-463, I would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in the decision making process regarding the type of dinner arrangements that are going to be made for our upcoming Squadron dinner that will be held on Friday night July 9,2004 in conjunction with the 2004 - USMC/Vietnam Helicopter Association Reunion held in Reno NV.

We basically have two options: dinner in a private meeting room at the Reno Hilton or at a local Reno restaurant.

The Reno Hilton is the fifth largest facility for meetings and conferences in the United States, it has an excellent catering reputation, and is a very popular site for group dinners. It is also the most convenient since it would not require transportation off site.

There are also a great number of excellent restaurants off site - American, Asian, Mexican, etc. I will be happy to explore these off site facilities in September 2003 and provide some menu options depending on what the majority of the people (responding to this email/website notice) would like to do. I will also check out what is available from the Reno Hilton.

Please respond to this email NLT 2100 hrs 09 Aug 2003 so we can get started planning for the Squadron Dinner. Thanks.

Semper Fi,

Robert "Bull" Wemheuer,
HMH-463 Squadron Coordinator,

Please reply to hmh463reunion@crapser.net with "ON-SITE" for dinner at the Hilton, "OFF-SITE" for dinner at another restaurant, or "NO PREF" for no preference.

OK, whats'up with all these CH-53's? As I remember them we took great care when the blades and eppenage were folded. Now I see them all flying around with the tail bent all cock-eyed. Whats up with that? Also, if they add anymore blades to the main rotor I think it may become a solid disc or something. If it were a solid disc -- wouldn't that make it into some kind of funny looking airplane or somethig? Maybe I should buy stock in rotor blades!

I WAS ASSIGNED TO HMM-164 SAR DETACHMENT (FIRST AERIAL RECOVERY TEAM "FART") DURING OPERATION END SWEEP. INITIALLY HMM-164 WAS GOING TO BE ASSIGNED TO PERFORM MINESWEEPING DUTIES, BUT SHORTLY AFTER I WORKED GETTING THE FIRST AIRCRAFT RIGGED AND TOWED A MOP IN SUBIC BAY, WE WERE CALLED OFF WHENHMH-463 AIRCRAFT ARRIVED AT CUBI POINT. I ENEDED UP WITH THE SAR UNIT (AVIONICS) EVEN THOUGH I WAS A 53 TYPE. I STILL HAVE SOME PHOTOS FROM THAT TIME FRAME "BURIED" SOMEWHERE IN BOXES AT MY HOUSE (EVERYTHING HAS REMAINED BURIED SINCE MY LAST MOVE!). I BELIEVE SOME OF THEM ARE OF THE RECOVERY OF THE CREW THAT LOST THEIR TAIL DURING MINESWEEPING OPS. I DID'NT KNOW TOO MANY OF THE HMH FOLKS, I DID A LOT OF WORK INITIALLY WITH THE AVI SHOP TRYING TO HELP THEM SOLVE THEIR INITIAL BALDEFOLD PROBLEMS, BUT AFTER THAT I WAS PRETTY BUSY TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH THE FROGS AND HUEYS. I HAVE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED YOUR SITE AND THE PICTURES. I TRIED TO MAIL ACOUPLE OF FOLKS ASKING FOR INFO, BUT THEIR ADDRESSES HAVE OBVIOUSLY CHANGED. I've just recently jumped on the net. Could not beleive your website.According to all the youngsters I work with, I always start it this way...."I remember back in the monsoon of 66-67" I was in the wheelswatch cab on the wooden scaffold (what we called Marble tower0 at MMAF when I got a call from a new call sign 'Heavy haulers'.Nasty day, almost typhoon weather. Biggest helicopter I had ever even thought of seeing comes out of the gloom to the north entering a short downwind pattern. The whole flightline came out to see what the h--- was going on. If my memory serves me after 36+ years, your first mission was lifting a Spec. Forces det. with Vietnamese troops out toward the Ashau. I had just picked up Sgt. when you guys arrived. MATCU-68, Capt. Bercholli commanding. and I believe Gysgt. Green was still on board. Does anyone remember Col. House, I beleive his sqd. call sign was 'Bonnie Sue'. My only regret is that I listened to my (now ex) pregnant wife and left the Corps, the only organization, or person, that never lied to me. SEMPER FI and GOD BLESS THE MARINE CORPS.

Larry South...I think of you and the other guys from the Hyd shop often. Sorry to say I did not find your keys. Were they to the "mule" or the ground support tractor? If I get a chance to go back I'll look around for them. Send Larry's brother your picutes...I know he'd be greatful for them. I too wonder about Mangooso, Tepper and all the rest. I always though Tepper was an old man because he was like 22 years old when he enlisted. I found a picture of Mario in a book about helicopters at a local book store. I don't know what made me type it in, but when I put in HMH 463 the rest of my day was taken browsing around the site. I was certainly sorry to hear about Al Morey. He was what a Marine was suppose to look like, when I knew him, not like the rest of us skinny young Marines. Not that we are skinny now. I was in the Hyd shop from January 70 till January 71. I also remember Larry Hatter and do have some Pic's of him if anyone is intrested, if not I'll keep the old pic's back where they have been for a long time. I noticed that Charles Petty left a note saying he had gone back. Did you find my keys? I wonder what ever happened to the guys like, Connie Tepper, Mario Qesada, Manguso (Goose), Quinn, Spencer, and all the other guys that use to play cards in the hyd. shop. I hope Col. Block doesn't read this and find out. I will say it is good to see him in some of the pic's. Great to see the web site. Father is SSgt. Barrett M. Chlupsa. I remember the day the "A" models flew into LTA. They were so huge and my dad had been gone for some time at the plant in Conn. I remember the 53's with blades stowed and tail pylons folded on the deck of the USS Tripoli leaving San Diego. I grew up with Crew Chiefs John D. Keith and Robert Miller. I also remember those from 463 that did not return. To the Corps, to the Greatest helicopter ever to fly, Igor Ivan Sikorsky, you will always be in my thoughts. SEMPER FI.......

I remember the last time I saw the Pig. It was March 1969. I was leaving Quang Tri headed back to Marble Mountain. The Pig had just made E-5 but I knew in my heart that the pig had a great carrier ahead of him. I could see a potential Staff-NCO in the making. For one thing he could drink his weight in Falstaff Beer. He was in excellent health. He was the only one in detachment "A" that would eat the scrambled egg c-rations, so he had plenty to eat. We would run out of just about everything from time to time but we never ran out of scrambled egg c-retions. He was tied to the front post of the center tent of the Quang Tri Circus. His belly was full of c-rations and his 50 caliber ammo can was full of Falstaff. Life was good. You could always tell when the pig had enough to drink, his eyes would cross and he could only walk sideways. We said our good byes and went our seperate ways, never to meet again. Years have passed and many memories have faded, but through it all we continue to remember our friends. Frank Emigh

More on "The Pig" that was adopted as a mascot by detachment "A" Quang Tri. This is from cruise book unit history page 6. "30 May 69 The squadron Mascot, an indigenous pig, was presented to The United World Missions Childrens Orphanage in DaNang. The pig, when slaughtered, dressed out at 170 pounds and helped feed many hungry children". Mystery of whatever happend to the pig has been solved. Semper Fi!!

I am a POW/MIA researcher and I am looking for any info on the Loss of a CH53 on 19 Feb 68 BU No 153278, B.J. Johnson, Cpt Bart Uplinger who is still MIA. PoP a Smoke documents has it that the CH 53 went into the same hill side as an earlier ship with Phillip Strand, on 08 Jan 68. The official loss coordinates from the USG has Bart going down 10 miles due east of Hue SV, in the Gulf of Tonkin. Does anyone have the coordinates to the hill that both ships went into?

THANK YOU for putting this together. I did two tours with 463 at MMAF..Dec 68-Dec 69 and June 70-June 71. Guess you could say I grew up with 463. Hydraulics shop and air crew. Was part of the detachment to Quang Tri in 69 and did my last flying on operation Lom Son 719. Made two trips back to Vietnam in 2000 and 2001. Visited Marble Mountain, there are still some of our covered revetments there. It is now a Vietnamese army base and they use "OUR" revetments for storing artillery. I have the pictures to prove it. There is a firt class resort just to the North of where MMAF was. It is truly something to see. Flew into Phu Bai?Hue airport when coming south from Hanoi, which was neat as I was up in Phu bai for a few weeks in 69. Took my son to the old Quang Tri facility which had buffalo wandering where the airtsrip was. Went up to Khe Sahn and stopped at the foot of the Rockpile. That brought up some tears that only you would understand. If you get the chance, go back....if you want to be put in contact with the person that arranged things for me, drop an email. Semper Fi

As with all thing there is a time to pass the flag, and the time is now. Mike Amtower has graciously accepted the challenge and I look forward to great things from Mike. I have served in this capacity for the last six years and again appreciated the opportunity to assist. SEEKING MEN FROM OPERATION FREQUENT WIND, April, '75 I'm a writer gathering material for a story about the Marines and sailors who helped get so many people out of the U.S. Embassy and the DAO compound in Saigon on April 29 & 30, 1975. If you were there, or knew someone who was, could you contact me? My aim is to write a solid piece for AMERICAN VETERAN magazine, based on the accounts of the men who did the hardest work, but seemed to get the least amount of time on TV for their effort. I've posted similar notices on the websites for HMM-164 and -165, and have gotten some great feedback. But the story sure isn't complete without the men who serviced and flew the CH-53's. Hope to hear from you. Semper Fidelis! Sincerely, Mike McLaughlin 54 Cutler Street #2 Winthrop, MA 02152 (617) 539-0302 MikeMac54@excite.com

He was Airframes Chief at MAG 39 at Camp Pendleton when he finished up.  He now lives in San Antonio, TX where he was born and raised.  "Duck" unfortunately was struck by a drunk driver in 94' while riding his crotch Rocket and lost his left leg at the hip, a broken neck, and is paralyzed in his left arm.  He still talks about the "Heavy Haulers" when I talk about '463 days.  If any of you remember "Duck" I would like to hear about him sometime.  I'm a Navy airdale vet myself (fixed and rotor) post Nam', but I am "Duck's" closest relative.  I am sure he would like to hear from any of you so here is his address if interested, and phone #.  Bill Duckworth, 438 Ware Blvd., San Antonio, TX 78221/(210) 924 1926.  Also, if anyone might be able to let him know how he might be able to get V.A. Disabiliy, I'm sure he would appreciate that info also.  Thanks alot, and God Bless You All!!! Sincerely, Jim McCann

Gary Zimmerman has put together a "Remembrance" section for our web site. This section is in memory of those HMH-463 crewmen/squadron mates lost in Vietnam. Be sure to take a look at it, and remember.

We received our first submission from a squadron-mate for our Remembrance pages. In this case, it was about Capt "Rex" Riley (KIA: 22 FEB 1968). Mike Amtower tells a powerful story about Capt. Riley's flying capabilities. What we need now is for any of you that have information/stories or photos concerning the incidents and individuals that are shown in the Remembrance section, to please provide some of that input to me or to Gary. Use the input provided by Mike Amtower as an example of what we are looking for. These kinds of stories honor our fallen brothers. So that we shall never forget.

Brockton, MA USA - Monday, July 02, 2001 at 08:33:58 (EDT) Hi!  My name is Barry Marple, president of the Airborne Mine Countermeasures Association. I'm trying to make contact with 47 naval vessels and the HMH-463 and HMM-165 that made up Task Force 78 which participated in Operation End Sweep which swept the mine fields of Haiphong Harbor, North Vietnam in early 1973. The Marine Corps squadrons performed the MOP sweeping tasks while Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 12 performed the MK-105 Magnetic Influence and mechanical sweeps.

The Airborne Mine Countermeasures Association will be conducting their reunion at Corpus Christi, Texas on February 4 through February 9, 2003. February 6, 2003 will be the 30th Anniversary of the beginning of Operation End Sweep. My thoughts are that if all the Naval ships of Task Force 78 and the Navy and Marine Corps helicopter squadrons gathered at Corpus Christi on the same dates we would have one heck of a party which would be cost effective for each of us. My suggestion would be that each organization conduct it's own reunion and use their own host hotel, but on the evening of February 6, all organizations would gather under one roof for a buffet dinner honoring those that participated in Operation End Sweep. This dinner would more than likely be held at the Corpus Christi Convention Center.

The Airborne Mine Countermeasures Association has already arranged tours of the USS Inchon (MCS-12) formerly LPH-12 and a possible short operational cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. Our invited guest speakers are: Senator John McCain, Mr. Peter Jennings, World News Tonight, ABC, and the Secretary of Defense. All organizations would be welcome to join in with other planned activities with the Airborne Mine Countermeasures Association if desired.

We feel this endeavor will give us all national exposure which can only enhance each of our efforts in reaching our former shipmates. I look forward in hearing from the men of HMH-463.

Respectfully,
Barry Marple
President, AMCM Association

P.S. Did you ever think you'd hear from a Navy Airedale about a joint reunion. And everyone brags about the NEW Navy hehehehehehe

Gentlemen, I am currently a pilot in HMH-463 at Kaneohe Bay, HI. As you may know, the squadron is trying to establish a program to recover information from the Squadron's successful past. Specifically, I am looking for information covering the minesweeping operations in Haiphong Harbor using HMH-463 CH53s. The operation was known as "End Sweep". If you have any information, or know of one who may have information, please email me at markkerber@earthlink.net.
